Hello :-)

First of all I would like to share many positive thoughts with you. Trees are blooming here and there…and it is important…, projects are opening up, more and more teachers are trying to embark upon the Internet experience and the ICT rebels community already counts more than 70 members, all professionals working directly with teachers, pupils and new technologies. There is hope for education as long as people keep thinking, sharing and communicating. The best developments will come out of a strong trust/respect link between realistic practitioners, creative content providers, open technicians and effective researchers.

My best rebellious and optimistic regards to you all,
Brigitte

An Amazing Community

Now if you want to know where the real new wave of pioneers is meeting, it’s within the” Rebels Community!”. The quality of the participation is unique and amazing. This growing group of pros is  willing to take part in discussions related to the developments of the Internet. Decisions are made in different places that are not necessarily connected to field practitioners and creators in contact with the next flow of autonomous Internet world citizens. One of the purposes of this initiative is to bridge this gap and think together freely of ways to keep the Internet an open ended network.

To join in send your request to:

· The teams with the best projects will receive cash or other prizes and will be invited to take part in the eXplora Youth University camp in autumn 2002.
· In the eXplora Challenge you get the chance to collaborate in international teams via the Internet using powerful tools.

The eXplora Challenge gives you, as a pupil or teacher, and others interested in international collaboration a chance to work together online. It is an excellent opportunity for cross-curriculum projects and assignments. It will be exciting and rewarding for all eXplorers and gives you the chance to build and enlarge your international network.

INSIGHT Schools

A certain number of European schools have been asked to collaborate with us on offering concrete descriptions of the way computers are used, the rooms where they are situated, how many teachers and pupils use them and the real meaning of those figures.
Take a look at the results of this very interesting initiative and go inside those schools:

http://www.eun.org/eun.org2/eun/en/practices_/content.cfm?ov=11200&lang=en

Open the pdf documents the schools have sent to get all the information.

Women’s Rights

If you are tackling the unfortunate issue of the respect - or rather disrespect -  of women in the world, you will find a lot of resources on this topic on the Human Rights Watch web site. Most of the content is provided in English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Russian, Arabic and Chinese.

European Award for Languages

The European Award for Languages is a Europe-wide initiative supported by the European Commission. The aim of the Award is to promote best practice in innovative and effective language learning in all schools and colleges, and in lifelong learning.
If you are involved in an innovative project dealing with the learning of languages, contact your national coordinator for all information.

The list of national offices is available from:
http://www.europa.eu.int/comm/education/language/contact.html

Special Needs Education

Until now, information on the use of ICT in the field of special needs education has been limited to National level sources – very little information has been available at European level.

In order to address this, the European Agency for Development in Special Needs Education has undertaken a major European wide investigation. This has lead to the creation of a dedicated web-based database with easily accessible information on policies, key issues, examples of interesting and innovate practice, key information sources plus future challenges in the field.

If you are teaching children with special needs we can offer you two tips:

A rich web site to consult and learn from:
www.european-agency.org

People to talk to and exchange with directly:

The virtual school’s special needs team
http://www.eun.org/eun.org2/eun/sv/vs-specialneeds/sub_area.cfm?sa=266

The eSchoolnet collaboration special needs expert:

Euros Move

Some Dutch mathematicians have set up an experiment to follow the diffusion of foreign Euro coins in the Netherlands and Belgium. They already have more than 1000 people collaborating by sending their count at least once a month. There is a website for the project, but this site is mostly in Dutch. You may find an English summary at:
http://www.wiskgenoot.nl/eurodiffusie/engindex.html

Very interesting!

Looking for Schools in Scotland?

"Scottish Schools Online" is a new searchable directory of schools in Scotland, intended to stimulate easier communication between schools and others.
Schools can update and edit their information, such as local authority, postal and email addresses and website location, which is then checked by a database manager to ensure a high degree of accuracy.

Sick Children’s Network

SCENT is the Sick Children's Educational Network for Teachers mailing list.
This list has been set up to provide a forum to share questions and answers on issues and concerns relating to the education of learners with medical conditions.  The list is intended to support professionals in their delivery of education to learners in hospital, at home, in an off-site unit or at a mainstream school.

More details can be found at:

One River, Many Projects

“La Seine aux mille visages aujourd’hui et il y a 100 ans », a project where the river is taken as the core element for pluridisciplinary work. You take the river as a reference and according to what you teach (geography, history, languages, environment, literature, etc) you decide which angle suits you for participation. This is a very good idea and I hope it will inspire many of you.
Please note that this project is not only used for teachers but also for the training of future teachers.

Helena Pedrosa teaches French in Portugal and she would like to network teachers of French around Europe/the world to enable them to find partners for their classes easily when setting up projects and email exchanges.
She also sees this as a very effective ways to share teaching issues and experiences.

Great initiative, one has to start somewhere :-) Help this colleague network!

Reading and Writing Skills, Comenius

A direct call from Norway:
“My name is Hilde Øen, and I work at Spetalen, an elementaryschool in the southeast part of Norway. We are 275 pupils and 30 teachers at Spetalen.
In  Norway there is a lot of focus on the reading and writing ability among the pupils. Our new minister of education is not at all satisfied by the results. At our school we have put this topic into our developing-plans for next year. We want to find out what can be done to increase the reading and writing skills. Wouldn’t it be  great to learn from each other, find the best teaching methods and develop new and better ways of teaching our pupils? I am willing to take the coordinator-responsibility the first year, but think fast! We can then apply for a preparatory trip to make the final plans and preparations. I can also write the application and mail it to those who are interested for approval, and then you have to mail it to your national agents.
Come on! Take a chance and be a bit impulsive!
Working together across the boarders is a great experience!  I know, cause I have done it for 5 years! We hope that some of you out there would like to join us! More exact plans will be mailed to those who are interested, and they are of course open for your ideas as well! Remember to think fast!

Regards from a hopeful group of teachers at Spetalen School , Råde, Norway.”

It’s up to you.

The questions are in French at:
