A lot of calls for collaboration this time! I am very happy with this. Using the Internet at school for resources is a good thing, but using it to collaborate is another dimension. It means opening up to other schools and countries, using communication tools, building and learning together. It is more complicated but one gets so much more out of it all.
Collaborating also means creating and working for the development of the Internet, and the web needs this!Talking about the Internet, from here I see its development and I am worried. Maybe some of you share my concern about the power of technology and standards that stop people from really creating content. I remember the fun I had when I started making web pages, now all this is over, we will all have to wear the same technological clothes and obey the rules imposed by technicians. Therefore I have created an email address for those who share this fear of the future with me. If you would like to discuss alternative ways to be creative on the Internet, I would be extremely happy to meet you online. The address is ict_rebels@yahoo.com and the password is internet. If you know anyone who also feels frustrated by the way the Internet is going, pass her or him the address. There will be no mailing list, no database, rebels know how to communicate!
Warm regards from Brussels to you all, rebels or standardisers!

A certain number of European teachers have accepted to be part of a special group. They have proved that they knew what it means to collaborate and they know how to integrate technologies to their daily work. Please do not hesitate to contact them for advice, they know what it’s like to collaborate across borders in a world that is not really ready for it yet.
To find them, go to:

Link and Learn Europe
_________________________________________________We have created a tool for you to get your pupils to write a story or a poem, and link it to their favourite web sites, images and/or sounds. The result is what we call a multimedia story.
Once the pupils have done this, the story is featured on the myEurope web site. Taking part in such an activity will enable the participants to become ICT literate in a very friendly way.
Read the pedagogical guidelines before you start!http://www.eun.org/eun.org2/eun/en/myeurope/content.cfm?lang=en&ov=10619

Proverbs and sayings are the fruit of experience and observation. They express practical truths or a simple perception of everyday life. They are concise and use simple rhymes, metaphors, comparisons or contrasts.
They embody our cultural archetypes in a wonderful and colourful way.
In each country, proverbs and sayings provide insights into beliefs and simple truths. Those beliefs were passed down from generation to generation, altered by the wisdom of the times and finally becoming part of culture and education.
How to take part?
Collect proverbs and sayings from your country, add a short definition and an example of when they are used.
This can be done with a text, a drawing, a poem, or any means of expression.
A great activity for language teachers.http://www.eun.org/eun.org2/eun/en/myeurope/content.cfm?lang=en&ov=9777

Projects and Initiatives
_________________________________________________“Together” tries to improve students’ collaborative learning skills.
The students are the main actors contributing with valuable information to the learning of other students (in the same school and partner schools). The teacher works side by side with the students.
How does it work?
Students communicate via e-mail.
Students and teachers edit a magazine on line, share ideas and experiences about the following themes: lifestyles, culture, houses, food, popular festivals. The articles are written in their mother language with a short summary in English. Teachers also share information about education systems, difficulties met, plans, goals. Students also report about what they do or learn. The languages used are: English, Austrian, Italian, Spanish, Galician.
Next year three more schools will join the project (England, Romania and Germany)More information at http://personal2.redestb.es/cruce

Ordnance Survey Maps site for kids:
An excellent initiative where pupils can learn about, play, find maps of cities and zoom in. There is even a quiz which can make the pupils learn geography and have fun at the same time. Try it, I did and my score was awful!

_________________________________________________The Royal Navy has worked with schools for many years, most notably in the areas of sport and fitness, but Maths and Engineering in Action is a most exciting project to date. By focusing on maths they are taking their involvement in education to a different level, aimed particularly at potential engineers, although if you are interested in technology and related apprenticeships you will also find this useful.
The web site is in English, it is an excellent way to ally maths and engineering. Bookmark it!
The level is quite high, check it first and adapt it to your pupils._________________________________________________
Environment for Young Europeans
The European Commission Directorate General for Environment offers a wealth of excellent resources for the pupils and teachers interested in all environmental issues.
Ms Margot Wallström is the European Commissioner for the Environment and she gives an exceptional impulse to all activities for youth.
The texts are only in English for now.http://europa.eu.int/comm/environment/youth/index_en.html
___________CALLS FOR COLLABORATION_______________
Create Together
____________________________________________________Marianne is a German teacher at a secondary school in Derby, England and she would like her pupils to have contacts with German speaking pupils from a school in Germany, Switzerland or Austria! It can also be a contact with a teacher of German from another country.

Twinning, Citizenship
The project should be a joint-project between two schools. A planning-meeting between the teachers involved is essential to set the detailed guidelines. The idea is to bring together students from two different cultural backgrounds first via e-mail and web-conferencing, working the entire spring-term with cross-curricular projects such as comparing school systems, the rights of young people, social well-fare system, equal rights, various social issues. Finally during the 2002-2003 academic year visit each other and do plenty of different study visits to each school.Contact: Inkeri

____________________________________________________Take a look at the work done by pupils from Belgium, Algeria, Canada and French Guyana.
Pupils and teachers exchanged via email and the stories were written in four phases. If your pupils speak French or if you teach French to them, you may contribute of simply inspire yourself from this idea.http://users.swing.be/villers/vie_ecole/contes/conte_intro1.htm

____________________________________________________Flavia teaches very very young children in Italy. She would like to integrate the use of technologies to her daily work. This is quite a challenge and if you know how to do this, I invite you to get in touch with her and exchange experiences. A lot of pioneer experiences are implemented here and there, it is easier to share than make the same good and less good discoveries in different parts of the world!

____________________________________________________A direct call for a very friendly project:
“Our sixth class elementary school will cultivate trees (Rhamnus Frangula) from seeds. If your class wants to join this project, we will send you a packet of seeds. We want you to send us a weekly growing report, with drawings, texts or digital pictures. We will put these data from different countries on one central website, so you can follow the evolution of the other participants.
The project will start right now, and go on until the end of February, maybe longer.”Contact: Jef Theys

"Carlitos cumple años", is the title of the new Spanish Event of Babelnet. Students organize Carlitos' birthday party, they write the invitation and search for a lovely e-card or produce it themselves. They make a shopping list and illustrate it with GIFS. They choose the music and even help little Sara, the exchange student who feels homesick.
Of course the students have at hand a storyboard that they may follow step by step.
Participation in the event is quite easy and it can be fun.To register, go to:

This school is located in Le Guilvinec, South-West Britanny, in France. Some pupils are studying the sea in its various aspects: scientific approach, literature about the sea, etc. The English teacher would like her pupils to exchange information with pupils living by the seaside around the world, to learn about fish, boats, water sports, jobs linked to the sea, pollution problems, etc in other countries.

Streams of Images and Rivers of Words
What a wonderful name! With this project pupils discover the world of rivers through words, poetry, art and environment. It is launched by all the schools, from nursery to upper secondary levels situated along the river Loire in France.
It is in fact a competition. Each participating class is invited to explore a little part of the river or of one of its tributaries (history, geography, ecology, ethnology, etc) and present their work in the form of a poem or a work of art. The coordinating team offers guidelines for teachers.
This year, the main themes are:
The Loire, our dream hub
The fantastic journey of migrating birdsRegister before February 15, 2002.
