Dear colleagues,

Now we are all well involved in the 2001-2002 school year and more than ever we need to stay in contact. Many projects are on their way and I am happy to be the link between you all for the dissemination of such wonderful activity in schools.

The next newsletter will be mainly devoted to the launching of our new portal for teachers, a sophisticated and user-friendly environment for you all to find resources, partners, ideas, projects and connections with European and world colleagues. For this new set of websites, we are looking for videos from schools or other educational institutions. The footage can cover any of the following topics:
classroom activities, education policy, school events,  teacher  training, any other topic in education!
The footage should be available in web-ready digital format (e.g. avi, mov, ram), not more than 30 minutes long, in English, French or German language. For this particular form of promotion, please contact our news coordinator, Alexa Joyce (alexa.joyce@eun.org)

Take care :-)

Partners Wanted for US and Japan

If you want to communicate via email and/or video-conferencing with schools from the USA, Japan, Hawaii, Europe, Australia, South Africa or Taiwan, I know where you can find contacts!
An old friend of mine from Japan is setting up a world network to facilitate video-conferencing communication.
Her name and email: Yoko Takagi
yoko@jearn.jp

She is currently looking for schools in Europe to exchange with Japan.

I also have a special call from Illinois, USA:
.
"Would your high school students like to form a cultural exchange partnership with a school in Chicago?  We are looking for French teachers or teachers of French to become our partners for this special project.  Our students, ages 15-16, are in four French II classes.  They would like to become friends with French teenagers and discuss common interests, such as music, television, food, clothes, family, and school.   We would like to correspond via email, but we can also videoconference and are willing to create joint web pages.  If you would like to partner with us, please email Lisa Perez, Von Steuben High School, at Lperez59@aol.com."

Kidlink, Peace Project

Kidlink has set up a special project space for pupils to reflect together and express their thoughts about violence in these times of international trouble.
Three ways to take part:
Write your thoughts about the recent violence in New York and Washington in the KIDCLUB diary.
Share your broader reflections -- poems, stories, thoughts – about violence, war and peace
Show how you build bridges with kids from other cultures everyday

Universe Project, The Netherlands
“The Universe through the eyes of the analyst, the artist, the economist, the doctor or the philosopher”

All kinds of people have been inspired by the universe: artists, scientists, philosophers and business people.  This cross-curricular topic is easy to integrate to many subjects and very motivating for pupils. The project is run in collaboration with science experts and the outcome should be very formative for participating schools.
The age group for participation is 14 to 19.

Eratosthenes, Twinning Project

In 205 B.C., the Greek astronomer Eratosthenes, at the time Director of the Great Library of Alexandria in Egypt, proposed a purely geometrical method to measure the length of the Earth’s meridian (circle passing through the poles). He started by using the observation of shadows made at two different places, Alexandria and Syene (now Aswan) distanced approximately 800 km apart (distance estimated in relation to the time taken by a caravan of camels to connect the two towns!) at the  time of the Summer solstice and at noon local solar time.

You want your pupils to re-discover this in the classroom? Well, just trust the coordinating team and tell them you are joining in! They will provide you with contacts, teaching modules and links to science experts.

New Italian Portal

The internet site of Tecnica della scuola has been online for three years, but this year it changed completely, adding new services and providing more information to school operators, students and their families.
It has more sections devoted to the latest issues related to schools. A wide section is devoted to the “foreign news”, to fellowships and to EU initiatives in the education and vocational training sector. But the real news is the section “Scuola In Web”, the first Portal for  the Italian School network which allows to retrieve information about schools internet sites, to look at the related school plans and educational tools, their projects and educational projects proposals, online services and students’ products, and to share experiences and views with other teachers. It includes about 3.000 Italian schools sites.
