Before anything else, and on behalf of the EUN office, I send my American subscribers my most sincere sympathy. We sadly share the sorrow of all the children who have lost a father, a mother, a relative, a friend in the atrocious disaster that took place on September 11. Therefore, this newsletter may be shorter than usual but it provides a new special section on “peace education” for those of you who would like to focus on this painful but hopeful topic over the coming months.
We, educators, have the mission to help make future citizens responsible and respectful of democratic values, life and human rights.Sadly yours,
Brigitte

_________________________________________________Challenge Europa is based on a virtual balloon journey around Europe - visiting 10 countries and 10 cities. It includes a range of problem solving tasks that give pupils clues to the destination of each stage of the journey.
The Challenge also includes opportunities to email experts in a variety of areas around Europe and a practical task with a local flavour. Teams are expected to complete an electronic 'travelogue' of their adventures around Europe - capturing the essence of each location - its heritage, traditions, history - and language.Challenge Europa also raises awareness of the euro - with pupils being rewarded in 'virtual euros' for solving problems on route - with opportunities to spend euros later on the journey.
Challenges have been set by teams of educators based in each of the locations. The Trek - a resource for younger children will be available from November.
This will be a mutilingual ( Dutch - German - English - Welsh ), multinational resource based on a journey from the source of the Rhine to the North sea. It will also raise awareness of the euro - with a range of maths problems to familiarise young pupils with the new currency. Both resources will contain a range of opportunities to enhance understanding of European citizenship issues.
Both can be accessed at www.edu.dudley.gov.uk/c2000
