Welcome back to noisy corridors, late summer freckles, chalk, keyboards,
marks and stress, pleasures and school laughs!

Our Nordic colleagues have already been working for some weeks, whereas our
Southern friends are still enjoying the sun, but I am sure you will all be
working hard, creating learning and sharing with your pupils for the next
nine months :-)

This first newsletter of the school year is quite full of ideas and calls
for you to take off to the world of the Internet at school in many
different ways whatever and wherever you teach. The EUN Teachers Newsletter
will soon be hosted in a very special website within the new EUN portal for
teachers. Our web team has worked hard all summer and will soon launch a
brand new platform especially dedicated to European teachers. You will be
informed about it through the web and also via our different newsletters.
Stay close!

Happy to be back in contact with you all!
My very best wishes for the starting school year :-)

Activities

Folk Costumes: 5 countries are already represented in this virtual museum
of the European Folk Costumes. Read more and contribute:
http://www.eun.org/eun.org2/eun/en/myeurope/content.cfm?lang=en&ov=6456

Soon: "Clean Up Europe" is an activity where children evaluate the
environmental situation of their city and compose an official letter to
their authorities. The letter should be constructive and propose solutions.

For this school year, myEUROPE will make a special effort to give the
schools, the teachers and their pupils more visibility through some special
site corners: "School of the Week" and "Teachers of the Month". New
activities will be launched: "European Waterways" (linking schools across
Europe), "mySchool of Tomorrow" (sharing pupils and teachers visions of
what the school of the future should be like), "Travelling School Bag" (A
bag full of items chosen as incentives for story telling and European
awareness travels around Europe), "myEUROPE Polls", "Meet an MEP" and more.

A New EUN Site is Born: SMC

The start of new school year sees the launch of the dynamic version of SMC.
Now School Principal can easily contribute to this site by filling in
their events and news items on line.

For September the focus is on Schools of the Future. Visit some schools in
Ireland who creating an on line community for their students, parents and
staff, using a technology developed by IBM. Why not take a look at one of
the Netherlands most technically advanced schools, or visit a unique
project in Grenoble in France linking 7 schools around the globe.  This
month there is a feature on two school principals, from Finland and Sweden,
whose schools have won recognition from their ministries for innovative
approaches to ICT.

Teacher Testers Wanted

Teachers and students interested in testing ETB's treasures (multilingual
European learning resources) are invited to step forward. During the final
pilot in winter 2001-2002, the test groups are called for the evaluation of
the user-friendliness of the application. For teachers dealing with ICT in
education, this is a great opportunity to bring European dimension into the
classroom!

Internet Safety Study Invitation

"I am most worried about students of 14-16 years of age, as they do not
properly understand the meanings and references even if they pretend to.",
says one of the teachers who took part in the survey.
The Internet is changing for the better how we live, work and learn.
However, there are increasing concerns about the negative aspects,
especially for children.

EUN invites you to tell us about your experience and your way of handling
internet security in your school:

Le Méditerranéen, Online Magazine

Le Méditerranéen is a junior on-line magazine that deals with the
Mediterranean area.
Created in 1997 as part of the multimedia ensemble Les Mémoires de l'Eau,
it progressively widened its scope to all subjects in which its young
editors and readers are involved: environment, but also cultural heritage,
society, economy, history of ideas …
This project was presented to me in Paris and I was impressed by the
commitment of the teachers who run this project. If you are interested in
working on articles related to Southern culture this year, this is a nice
way to do it.

Louvre.edu, Arts for All

If you teach visually impaired children, this site is a great initiative
launched during the last eSchola week by the famous French museum "Le
Louvre" to enable those children to have access to the beauties of arts.
Special activities are suggested, guidelines and advice are also available.
We welcome this high quality project for special needs education.

Working Together, Cultural Collaboration

This project has just been rewarded for its excellence in international
school collaboration: 8 virtual classrooms for 16 teachers and their 193
pupils communicate, develop three themes and manage 8 autonomous web sites.
All exchanges are done in English. The "real" classes are located in
Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Japan and Sweden. The pupils are between
16 and 20.
Take a look and contact the teachers for advice if you are testing a
similar initiative in your school.

In the footsteps of Eratosthenes

In 205 B.C., the Greek astronomer Eratosthenes, at the time Director of the
Great Library of Alexandria in Egypt, proposed a purely geometrical method
to measure the length of the Earth's meridian. This discovery has been
adapted by professional primary school education experts and was
implemented in many schools during the last school year. It will be
available again for 2001-2002, join in!
This is an excellent activity designed to teach experimental science at
primary school level.
