The end of the school year is now very near, many pupils are working for their exams, teachers are finishing the curriculum before marking exam papers…and the sun is shining all over Europe!
You are not going to start anything now, but what you can do is sit outside and think about which projects you would like to get involved in next school year: Comenius projects, myEUROPE activities, eSchola 2001, email exchanges, chats…
You may also want to select quality resources as teaching materials or for your pupils to learn to use the web safely. This newsletter is the last one of the school year, it is meant to inspire you and help you get new ideas for the next school year, “Newsletter 51” will be sent to you end of August or early September. I will check my email through the Summer and collect all your calls and information, stay in touch. I will be there with you, I know very well that many teachers do most of their creative work when they are on holiday!
Have a wonderful Summer, relax, rest, enjoy and come back to us with your usual extraordinary energy :-)

Anne, from Ireland:
“The Learnspace area was very active during eSchola week with exciting presentations in the online learning platforms provided by INTERWISE and LUVIT. The teachers involved in the EUN Virtual School created many exciting and innovative projects using these platforms, including an online presentation on 'Tunnels and Bridges in INTERWISE' where the participants could talk to the teacher David Faure in real time. We also had a contribution from the KIKO company in the United States who provided entry to their new online learning platform, and from BOXMIND, a UK company, an example of their video lecture material . The projects generated for eSchola week will remain as a testimony to teacher's creativity and will provide an invaluable resource for the future.”________________________________________________
Favourites http://eschola.eun.org
Anna Maria, from Italy:
“eSchola succeeded to enlighten how best practitioners choice their own best practices. In a very informal way expert teachers, teacher trainers, inspectors and researchers from Sweden, France, Italy, Austria, Germany, UK, Slovenia and Ireland have presented their favourites experiences and have explained why they find them so “special”. We had not enough time to translate and put online all the contributes we have got, in the next days you will have a richer collection of opinions.”

________________________________________________Knowledge Pool http://eschola.eun.org
Welmoed, from the Netherlands:
“The Knowledge Pool is all about sharing experiences and information on problems and solution of using new technologies in the classroom. During the eSchola week, special attention was given to the issue of safe Internet use for kids. In the Knowledge Pool database, wonderful examples of how to deal with this problem were entered, and also the forum is coping with different aspects of Internet safety. The safety chat, which was online last Thursday 10 May, contained very interesting discussions and different approaches on, among others
Filtering software
Filtering on different age levels
Teacher surveillance/control
How to deal with pupils visiting distractive sites in class (music, games etc.)
Possible ‘punishment’ for children visiting harmful sites
Policies and European safety standards
The forum is still there to further discuss Internet safety, and the database of examples in the Knowledge Pool will remain intact after eSchola. Submissions about your approach on, not only Internet safety, but also on management, technical or pedagogical issues/problems are still welcome. While you are there, also have a look at other great examples, which were submitted by for example Flemish, Russian, Israeli, Spanish and English eSchola participants!”welmoed.lockefeer@eun.org
________________________________________________Open Doors http://eschola.eun.org
Bengt, from Sweden:
“More than 100 schools submitted to ´Open Doors´. Many of these schools contributed with special eSchola-activities for visitors of their homepages.
´Open Doors´ shows with all the submitted schools a wonderful variety of innovation in the use of new technologies in schools. The most important outcome of this activity is that new schools unknown for well-known European projects such as myEurope, ENIS, Comenius, Netd@ys or Socrates got an opportunity to show others what they do in classrooms for education and for fun.”

School Portraits http://eschola.eun.org
Margit, from Austria:
“The School portraits were a great success, many teachers all over Europe got a chance to see some of the most cutting edge practices. Seventeen schools, particularly known for their innovative use of information communication technology has been selected by the Ministry of Education and Training in Europe, representing as leading-edge schools their countries. The teachers had to answer lots of questions from eSchola participants about their leading school practice.
The school portraits are very encouraging for other schools to integrate new technologies in the classroom and reflect the future for schools in Europe.”Contact: Margit

Europe Day http://eschola.eun.org
Petru, from Romania:
More than 300 teachers brought Europe in their school, using the pedagogical guidelines, ideas, practical tips and resources via the Europe Day kit. Cultural events were held in various places like folk-dancing, art exhibitions, music, culinary delights, guided tours, concerts, children's entertainment and others! We got many feedbacks on the eSchola site, please have a look at: http://www.eun.org/eun.org2/eun/en/travel_eschola/sub_area.cfm?sa=304Contact: Petru

Roger, from the UK:
“We are amazed and proud of the number of submissions for eSchola awards, but much more we are intrigued by the fresco of European eLearning that they portray.
Schools have presented their best projects and we can have a lively picture of how Comenius, Socrates and other EU programs have influenced, supported, improved the quality of education. But I dare to say more interesting, schools have shown their own everyday use of ICT. Kindergarten, primary schools even teacher training centres have presented the story of the development of their websites, the implementation processes, the work of students and the cooperation with parents and local communities. Not only: we are able to map an unbelievably rich collection of didactical resources, created and gathered by teachers: lesson plans, questionnaires, exercises, all proved and tested in school practice are now easily retrievable through our data base! Rewarding the best ones and bringing out all the contributes is now our demanding task!”Contact: Roger

We will keep and expand this section. No projects or resources will be lost, on the contrary. We are very proud to provide teachers with such a wealth of activities, projects and educational web sites. When you have a moment, go there and visit some sites, bookmark them, contact project coordinators and ask them if you can participate in their projects next year, collect information and teaching materials for your lessons, help yourselves to all these wonderful gems.

Inspiration
_________________________________________________This online magazine provides information on the advantages of knowing foreign languages, education through information, and the use of new technologies in communication. Young Portuguese, Swedish, Swiss, and French students gathered stories from adults who have a passion for learning foreign languages. They had many different motivations for learning languages and they accepted to share their experiences. Eleven schools took part in this project. Each of them brought stories collected by the students which they translated into the other three languages. Languages have often been considered as a barrier in the past, but in the following articles they became a means of communication, of integration, and sometimes of rehabilitation. Each story is different, but they all include the same hunger to learn, to discover and to open up others. These stories opened our eyes to the many ways to learn a language, through feelings, necessities, hobbies…

____________________________________________________History of European Discoveries, France
A new site was born out of the eSchola initiative: The History of European Discoveries. Primary schools register and commit themselves to working on this topic over the next school year. The purpose is to choose a national invention/discovery, re-discover it in the classroom with unexpensive materials, inquire about the inventor, the impact of the invention on society, the historical and social context at the time ..etc. This project stems from the wider network called “La Main à la Pâte” which promote the learning of science at primary school level.
Get in touch with the coordinator as soon as possible to involve your school. All the tools and pedagogical support will be provided to you by professionals of technologies and education based all over Europe. This really is a great project for you and your pupils.
All the work will be done “underwater”, schools will collaborate and work in cyberspace, the result will come to light on eSchola 2002: an online encyclopaedia of European discoveries make by young pupils for young pupils.Contact: David Jasmin

A message from Francisca:
“Our school is a public secondary school, we have got about 500 students

We are in Granollers, a city situated about 30 km from Barcelona.
Last year we got a photovoltaic installation:
http://www.xtec.es/centres/a8045628/fotovoltaica/
As you can see from our web site, we would like to focus more about solar energy, but I can not find partners. I would like to meet other teachers who had work this area in class with pupils from 12 to 18.
From our web site it is possible to get data in real time about solar radiation, temperature, etc.
http://www.xtec.es/centres/a8045628/fotovoltaica/temps_real.htmWe are also interested in sustainable development, take part in forums, discuss, chat”
