Dear colleagues,

This is the last teachers newsletter before the eSchola Grand Opening in Stockholm on May 7!
A lot is happening in the website and I will guide you around to help you find your way to all the new resources, projects, workshops and contacts it offers. Look around, take part and participate, a lot of effort is being put all over Europe right now to provide teachers and pupils with a broad range of quality educational opportunities. Take this chance to move further with us!

There has never been such an initiative before, never have so many people involved in education done so much for teachers. We are really proud to do this for and with you all.

About the currently suspended French version of this newsletter, we have a young Belgian student at the office for some days and I will ask her to do the translations as long as she can.  French speaking teachers need to be informed as well as all others in their own language.

So now I will take you by the hand and tell you in my usual personal informal way what is happening here.

All the best to you and eSchola!  :-)
Brigitte

TRAVEL AND LEARN
________________________________________________

Europe Across Time and Space     http://eschola.eun.org

Take a look at the map of Europe, click along, discover resources and open collaborative projects. Take part in them or make contacts with the teams for next school year. Many resources have been selected and submitted by institutions that focus on education as a priority. Click on a vehicle and then on the different flags…many more flags will come and offer you direct access to European treasures.
We are working on a world map at the moment, Israel, in particular has already submitted a number of very interesting projects. The United States are also beginning to show up!

If you want to be on the map, either contact me directly or submit online. The form may be a little complicated, do not let this stop you, I will help and even call you personally if you have any problems. I want the maps to be full of coloured little flags for you!
A few very good projects will be highlighted during eSchola week because they offer special eSchola events. Keep your eye on this section.

There is a brand new activity here too: Multimedia Travel Stories

Instead of simply asking you to travel around Europe, we would like to make this an opportunity for your pupils to learn more about how to use new technologies. Travel and tell us about your favourite sites by writing a “hypertext-story”, a text linked to websites, pictures and sounds. The tool is ready and online for you. Just follow the guidelines…it is quite a unique exercise! A funny example is at your disposal. When you have typed your story and made your links, we will publish it in the eSchola website with pleasure!

Europe Day     http://eschola.eun.org

If you want to focus on Europe during the eSchola week, you may download a document, print it and use all our tips, links, examples for inspiration. This file has been put together with a lot of effort by Petru, our Romanian colleague, for you to save time surfing around. He has tried to find ideas and quality documents to help you bring Europe to your school. This effort is all the more valuable as it comes from the heart of someone who belongs to one of those countries that want to be part of the European Union, and who has a lot of experience in collaborative projects using new technologies.

We are also opening here a special section for the teachers who are planning to celebrate Europe at school to tell us about it. If you are making plans, send us a photo of your school, your town, your class and tell other teachers what you will do on the 9th of May.

Home Swap     http://eschola.eun.org

5 teachers have offered their home for exchange over the holidays so far! Two in Italy, one in Romania, one in Belgium and one in France. Take a look, contact your colleagues and propose your own home. This is a very nice way to spend time in a foreign country and experience the comfort of a real local home!

School Pals     http://eschola.eun.org

Here we would like you to feel the human presence of other schools and teachers.
If you need partners for projects, go to ”PalFind”.
If your pupils are looking for contacts, send them to “School Yard”
If you want to talk with colleagues at coffee break, we will open a chat room for you during eSchola week.

Many teachers would like to set up small projects to start with new technologies, others already run large scale projects and would like to get involved in a twinning exchange to further it up with a school trip. There are many possibilities. The “School Pals” section offers you opportunities to work and create with one European colleague at a time.
Please note that other twinning possibilities are proposed further down this newsletter and also in the Europe Across Time and Space map. Go and find them!

Favourites     http://eschola.eun.org

We have asked teachers, inspectors, trainers, researchers and head teachers to select what, for them, are the best examples of new technologies in education. They personally expose themselves for you to know what education experts bookmark as examples of best practice.
Those experts are located all over Europe and propose projects from their own countries.  As I am writing this, five “favourites” are already available, but many more are being translated and others will be added over the coming days.
Visit the suggested web sites, bookmark the ones you prefer, make your own page and send it to us if you have more ideas to share.

There is also here a link to the EUN Comenius Space, a special website opened for all the teachers who wish to share, set up projects and tips, inform themselves about the European Commission’s Comenius action.

Knowledge Pool     http://eschola.eun.org

The boom of new technologies in education doesn’t go without problems as we all know and experience every day!
The numerous issues raised by the fast evolution of education can be related to school management, the harmonious and safe integration of the Internet to pedagogy, initial or in-service training. If you have managed to find ways around those issues in your schools or regions, contribute your own experience. If you are planning an ICT strategy in your school or region, this is where you will find tips to solve some of your problems.
The eSchola Knowledge pool is very important and, with your help, will actually help us all to move the frontier of education further.

Open Doors     http://eschola.eun.org

Invite your fellow teachers to have a look at how you use new technologies.
Show them your collaborative projects, multimedia content and tools and let them have a look at your particular way to use them in class for fun and work. Open the doors of your website to the world! Lead every visitor through your homepage and let him/her know about both your innovative and daily use of new technologies.

If you want to display your projects, you are free to choose the best waty and the easiest language for you.
And why not organise an open day at school, where you invite neighbouring schools for activities and conferences?

“Open Doors”  is also, of course, a chance for you to get partners and contacts in other countries.

Eratosthenes Project

This interdisciplinary activity is based on the method invented more than 2000 years ago by Eratosthenes in order to measure the Earth radius. It involves groups of students in two - at least - different cities, both measuring, at the same time, the length of the shadow cast by a gnomon.
They collaborate using the Internet to exchange the results that are both necessary for the final measurement.

This is a very interesting twinning activity. It is also proposed by an excellent French projet called “La Main à la Pâte”, see the School Pals section for further details.

Can you help? Sure you can!

Babelnet Spanish Competition

The fourth event for Spanish/Babelnet has gone online and can be found under http://www.knm.fi/babelnet

"Un día en Europa" invites learners (individuals or groups) to build an HTML page about how they spend a typical school day. To make this more interesting, they are asked to get in touch with other pupils registered to the event and exchange information. They find e-mail addresses under "Participantes" and a chat room will be attended by the Babelnet Team during the e-schola days (7-11 May 2001). Guidelines, participation rules and more information on the topic can be found under http://www.knm.fi/babelnet: EVENTOS. Of course there are prices waiting for the best five contributions. Make your inscriptions to the event now! (contributions accepted till May 26th).
