Hello everybody,
A new project is about to be launched, the “Comenius Space”, and this newsletter will inform you about it for a while. The Comenius Space will then have its own newsletter, especially edited for Comenius teams. For our colleagues teaching outside Europe who may not know what this is, “Comenius” is the name of a set of actions taken by the European Commission to fund collaborative initiatives in education.
Days are getting longer and even if the weather is moody, we can feel the Spring in the air! Pupils are getting restless and piles of tests seem to take longer to correct. Never mind, we are with you, creating fun pedagogical activities and events to help you expand the scope of your work, break the classroom walls and let the Internet open your teaching to limitless dimensions!
Very kindly yours,
Brigitte :-)

Competition in French
“Europe en Scène”The Jean Monnet Association is launching a competition in French for European schools. Schools are invited to compete by sending a scenario about Europe, its past, its present or its future. The winners will have the honour to see their scenarios turned into a film shown to thousands of young European visitors at the Jean Monnet House near Paris.
Deadlines for submission: May 31, 2001The submissions should be in French only. French speakers from France and Belgium are especially invited but we would be very happy to see teachers of French from all over Europe take part in this very nice initiative.

Dialogue on the Future of EuropeTake an active part in the new debate on the future of Europe!
Niels Jørgen Thøgersen, European Commission, is responsible for the New Dialogue on the Future of Europe. He invites you to speak out and express your thoughts, concerns and hopes via the new website launched on March 7 by M. Romano Prodi, President of the European Commission, and Prime Minister Göran Persson, Prime Minister Guy
Verhofstadt and Commissioner Michel BarnierFor practical reasons, the web site will be in four languages from the beginning (English, French, German and Swedish) but it will be in all 11 languages at the latest by June 15.
The purpose of the Web Portal is to create a "carrefour", where a large part of the public debate will take place.
The Web Portal will be actively promoted in the Member States as well as in all 13 Candidate Countries._________________________________________________
The next chat will deal with the enlargement of Europe.
Enlargement is one of the most important opportunities for the European Union as it prepares for the 21st century. It is a unique, historic task to further the integration of the continent by peaceful means, extending a zone of stability and prosperity to new members.
In March 1998 the EU formally launched the process that will make enlargement possible. It embraces the following thirteen applicant countries: Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, the Slovak Republic, Slovenia and Turkey.
We are all, as European citizens, involved in this unprecedented process.
Work on this topic with your pupils and register your school. Be quick, we only take a maximum of 10 schools for each chat. Only registered myEurope schools can take part in myEurope activities.

_________________________________________________Young Agenda 21
Children and Environment
Stavanger, Norway, 7-12 May 2001Young Agenda 21 is the name of an environmental foundation, founded September 2000 by a number of municipalities and companies in the Rogaland region, South West Norway. The aim of this foundation is to arrange international gatherings for children and raise their awareness of environmental protection.
Young Agenda 21 is taking seriously the challenge from the United Nations’ Rio summit in 1992, postulated in the final document Agenda 21: to involve children and young people in environmental questions concerning their own future.
Each participating group should bring to Norway a presentation of their own environmental project, be it within the field of energy, biological diversity, solid waste or whatsoever. The presentation should include some kind of activity which includes the audience. In addition to the exhibitions and stage performances, there will be some workshop activities in the hall, as well as a number of cultural and social activities, excursions and hikes to various nature areas and visits to the local host schools.
Take part!
