New Activities, European Citizenship and Cultural Diversity

Political Poster Gallery
http://www.en.eun.org/myeurope/citizen/posters.html

This activity is a complementary way to teach about Europe and European
politics and the ways in which we advertise for or against political matters
about Europe.
Get your pupils to look for political posters related to European questions
in your town. Take pictures, scan them and send them to the project
coordinator.
You may also use what is already displayed in the site and compare, analyse
with your pupils.

Myths and Legends
http://www.en.eun.org/myeurope/culture/myths-legends.html

An activity for primary schools (6-12), in your own language, for pupils:
We all know about those legends that reflect our customs, our region, our
country, our history. These stories are our heritage, they are one way to conjure up our
world.
Tell us about your dragons, fairies, elves, mermaids, kings…
We also provide you with complementary links for more information about this
wonderful topic.

The Future of Schools in the Community: Can You Help?

A special call to the ENIS network from Professor David Wood:

“I am trying to find out whether European schools are making increasing use
of their buildings, facilities and teaching expertise outside of the normal
hours of schooling. I am currently working with colleagues on a major EUN
study to consider possible future scenarios for schools in the light of the
impact of ICT on what, how, when and who they teach. This has given rise to
questions about the extent of any diversification taking place in the use of
school facilities and expertise. I know from personal experience that some
schools in the UK are offering increasing access to members of their local
communities in order to meet a variety of educational and recreational
needs. I wonder if this is a more general phenomenon? If you and your
colleagues are pioneering such activities in your school, or if you know of
any published statistics and data on these aspects of schooling, I would be
grateful to hear from you.”

Please reply to djw@psychology.nottingham.ac.uk or to Professor David Wood,
School of Psychology, University of Nottingham, Nottingham NG7 2RD., UK.

Leonardo Project Partnership, Mobility, Italy

There are 500 pupils in this Italian ENIS upper secondary school which is
involved in all kinds of activities related to Citizenship, Sciences,
Environment, Employment/Unemployment, ICT, European cultural identity and
diversity. The teachers already have some experience in Comenius, Leonardo and Netd@ys
projects. They are looking for partners in other European countries for a new Leonardo
Mobility project (Placements for students and Exchanges for teachers).
If you want to collaborate with this ENIS team, contact them BEFORE October
20!

Three Lower Secondary Partners for Minerva Project, Norway

Amot lower secondary school and the Teacher Training Department of Hedmark
College have made a pre-proposal for a project funded by Minerva under the
Socrates program. They need partner schools, 3 lower secondary schools and 3 teacher-training
colleges, BEFORE November 1!
The objective of the project is to take the Internet to a new level for
pupils ands schools, teacher training students and teacher training
colleges. The aim is to create active school societies posting their own
material on the world wide web. Unfortunately many school homepages today
are bad and is seldom updated, and students are not given possibilities to
produce their own content. They will examine solutions for producing
interesting material, which can be read of small and big audiences. They
want to develop the cooperation between teacher training colleges and
schools.
For the participating schools a project based on European citizenship and
where the participating schools use mma (multimedia authoring) on a high
level will be planned in detail.

Canadian Innovative Schools Network

The Canadian SchoolNet's Network of Innovative Schools is a project that
recognizes schools using Information and Communications Technology in
meaningful and imaginative ways to improve learning. The Network helps to
ensure students, educators and community members are prepared for the
challenges and opportunities of information and communications technology
for learning.
http://www.schoolnet.ca/nis-rei/

Some very nice contacts have already been established between the European
Network of Innovative Schools ( Sweden and UK) and its Canadian counterpart.
Here is a wonderful article written on September 25 in Ottawa, Canada:

“ UK representatives To Innovative Schools ICT Conference Interviewed on
Canadian Television."
David Bateman and Alistair Telfer, both from leading innovative ICT schools
were interviewed last night on Canadian television regarding their visit to
the SchoolNet Network of Innovative Schools(NIS)Conference- Alistair was
quoted as saying how impressive the conference had been and "that the idea
of bringing recognized innovative schools together face to face was an
examle for the UK and Europe to follow".The conference, under the umbrella
of Industry Canada proved to be a melting pot of ideas and has resulted in
the forging of links both across Canada and overseas.
An Australian representative from South Australia, John Travers, also
attended the conference enabling further links to be established to the
schools in Australia.
The NIS conference brought together 54 schools across Canada, recognized for
their innovation in the use of ICT in the curriculum.  Innovations include
CDRom production, Multimedia websites and creative projects such as the
Peace Project between Canada's Ursula Franklin Academy  and Sweden's
Fredrika Bremer Gymnasiet. The Network is entering its second year with a
new determination to build strong communication links among the members."

EUN Metadata Course

http://www.en.eun.org/eun.org2/eun/en/training/entry_frame.cfm?id_area=5

This course has been designed for the teachers who are responsible for web
sites and wish to learn how to make it easily accessible to search engines.
It will give you a general overview about Metadata. Afterwards you will be
able to produce Metadata by yourself and enlarge by implementing it in your
sites, the effectiveness of being found in the internet.
The Internet is constantly growing and within this vast source of
information it is getting difficult to find relevant information. Metadata
is a means to make the search more efficient and targeted. Metadata allows a
more precise control of the search instruments.

When you have gone through the course, do not forget to send us your
feedback! It is important for us to have your opinion. Here is where to find
the form:

************************ RESOURCES ***************************

Teaching Packs, Women’s History

http://www.en.eun.org/eun.org2/goto.cfm?aid=11

Teaching Packs is a product-oriented project designed for upper secondary
school teachers. Those products are thematic portfolios composed of
documents and activities for classroom use. The approach is definitely
pan-European and cross-curricular.
Some of the products fill in gaps for subjects provided for by the
curricula, but for which teaching resources have not been made available,
namely women's history, or sensitive subjects that have not been dealt with
sufficiently by curricula, such as nationalism and building a common living
space, population flows and genocide.

The first pack is about Women’s history in the 20th century. Make use of
this excellent site!

EUN Software Library

http://www.en.eun.org/eun.org2/eun/en/software/entry_frame.cfm?id_area=8

The Software Library is a database of computer packages for schools,
teachers and pupils who use the Internet. It includes application programs,
tools and resources for:
* Accessing the World Wide Web
* Using facilities such as e-mail, chat rooms and newsgroups
* Downloading or exchanging files and software
* Creating and managing your own Web site or pages

Most of these products are intended for use by older pupils or adults, but
some have been designed specifically for younger children; most are suitable
for use in school or at home.

English as a Second Language, Lesson Plans

http://www.english-to-go.com/

An international group of linguists and educators collaborate on the
production of each lesson to provide classroom ready materials that come
complete with student worksheets, teacher's notes and supplementary
activities. The range of activities used varies from lesson to lesson in
order to focus on and develop different micro-skills. The lessons can be
used with individuals, pairs, small groups or large classes and are designed
to be of relevance to the widest possible audience.

Can the ENIS schools test the free weekly lesson and email the coordinators
their impressions? This project is only starting and it is run by an old
project partners of mine!

Resource Discovery Network

http://www.rdn.ac.uk/

Recently announced, this new site from the Resource Discovery Network (RDN),
a UK-based network of subject gateways, offers a collection of free
interactive tutorials to help students, researchers, and instructors
discover some of what the Internet has to offer in their subject areas.
Written by subject specialists and librarians, each of the ten guides
features a tour of select key sites in its field, tools and techniques for
Internet searching, criteria for judging online resources, and a review of
the key points and tips covered.
While browsing the tutorial, users can click selected links and have them
placed in a Links Basket for printing or future reference (but they must be
saved before leaving the tutorial). Experienced Internauts probably won't
find much here that's news to them, but it is a good resource for Web
rookies or as an adjunct to any course that utilizes online content.
Twenty-seven more tutorials are planned for release in May 2001.

Catalogue Collectif de France
http://www.ccfr.bnf.fr/
English Introduction to the Catalogue
http://www.ccfr.bnf.fr/rnbcd_visu/acc1_eng.htm

This is a project of the French Ministries of Culture and Education as well
as the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the CCFR is divided into two sections, by institution
(Repertoire des Bibliothèques) and by document search (Localisation de
Documents). “Répertoire des Bibliothèques » allows users to search 3,900
institutions by name, location, and type of library. Search results include
contact information, a brief history, a description of the collections, and
details about the services offered. A search of Collections in this section
also allows users to identify institutional holdings by type of materials,
language, and by date of publication. The Plans for the CCFR in 2001 include the addition of another eight million bibliographic records from university libraries and the national library's
collections. At present, all help documentation and navigation is only
available in French.
