NAME Freydís Eiríksdóttir TIME Around the year 1000 PLACES Born either in Iceland or Greenland, lived in Greenland and Vinland (North America) FAMILY Freydis was the daughter of Eirik the Red, the discoverer of Greenland. Eirik the Red is the son of Þorvald Asvaldsson. He left Norway with his father and settled in Drangar in Iceland, where he married Þjóðhildur. They had 4 children: Leifur the Lucky, Þorvaldur, Þorsteinn and Freydís. STORY Because Eiríkur got involved in some killings he was banned out of Iceland. This was the reason he made his ship ready and left to look for land in the north-east. Which he found and called Grænland, or ‘The Green Land’, so that it would attract people to go there.
After they moved to Greenland, the expeditions of this family were far from over. First Leifur looked for land abroad, which makes him the real first discoverer of America, these days called Vinland, and later also Freydis made the trip overseas together with her brother Þorvaldur.
But before she left Greenland she married a certain man named Þorvarður of Garðar, a place in Greenland which is now called Igaliko, where the first bishop of Greenland lived. Her husband joined her on every trip.
She organised a second trip to Vinland with the brothers Helgi and Finnbogi under the agreement that they would share the profit. But after they arrived, Freydis real wickenedness showed up and by misleading her husband, she managed to get the brothers killed and their fellow men. Because nobody was ready to kill the 5 women, who travelled with the brothers, she killed them herself with an axe. As no one was allowed to pass this terrible truth on she paid everybody very well after they arrived in Greenland. But money wasn’t enough to keep this events quiet. As soon as Leifur found out he was in such an anger that he cursed his sister and all her descendants. Since then nobody thought but evil about her.She is one of the many characters in the Sagas about Eirik the Red and the discovery of Greenland and North America. (In Icelandic: Grænlendinga saga and Eiríks saga rauða.)

2. Guðríður Þorbjarnardóttir
Gudrid is the extremely beautiful daughter of Þorbjorn Vifillson, son of Vifil of Vifilsdale, and Hallveig. She lived as a foster-daughter with Orm and Halldis, who were great friends of Gudrids parents and very good farmers, at their farm in Arnarstapi for a long time.
She left Iceland with her father, after rejecting the marry proposal of Einar, to go overseas, to join Eirik the Red in Greenland. They landed on Herjolfsness.
In Greenland a grand future was predicted to her by a woman named Þorbjörg, also known as the little Sybill. Guðríður is also gifted with special gifts, to contact the paranormal, and for a while she even helped Sybill, but it is actually against her religion, for she is christian.
She married one of Eirik the Red’s son, called Þorsteinn. Together they undertook a trip to Vinland, but this wasn’t very successful. Not long after they were Greenland (Lyusfjorður) Þorsteinn fell ill and died. After his death she goes to Brattahild.
Her second husband is Þorfinnur Karlsefni, an Icelandic merchant, who lived at Brattahild and who was very close to Leifur the Lucky.
Again she went to Vinland, where gave birth to a son, Snorri, and where they made contact with Skrælings (the original habitants of Vinland). Guðriður has an appiration of a Skræling soman there.
They stayed there for one winter and then she and her husband and son went back to Iceland via Norway.
After Karlsefni’s death, her son took the farm over and when he got married, Guðriður decided to go on a pelgrimage to Rome. And so she did, and when she returned her son had built her a church near the farm. There she became a nun and stayed the rest of her life there as an anchoress.
As for Guðriðurs descendants; her son Snorri had a daughter named Hallfrid, who was the mother of bishop Þorlak Runolfsson. Snorri had also a son, named Þorgeir, the father of Yngvild, the mother of the first bishop Brand. She was in Vinland for the second time c.1010.
